Running Pace Calculator
Use this calculator to solve any one of three related quantities: pace, elapsed time, or distance. Supply the other two positive values, choose kilometres or miles, and select the result you want.
Pace is time per unit distance, such as 6 minutes per kilometre. It is the reciprocal form of speed: pace tells you how long one unit of distance takes, while speed tells you how much distance is covered per unit time.
Calculations used
The three relationships are:
pace = elapsed time ÷ distanceelapsed time = distance × pacedistance = elapsed time ÷ pace
Internally, the calculator uses seconds and kilometres, then converts the requested output. The international mile is exact:
1 mile = 1.609344 km
When a mile pace is entered, its seconds-per-mile value is divided by 1.609344 to obtain seconds per kilometre. When a pace per mile is requested, seconds per kilometre are multiplied by 1.609344.
The displayed pace is rounded to the nearest whole second. Calculated elapsed time is also rounded to the nearest second, and calculated distance is shown to two decimal places.
Worked example
A runner covers 10 km in 1 hour:
- elapsed time = 3,600 seconds;
- distance = 10 km;
- pace = 3,600 ÷ 10 = 360 seconds per kilometre;
- 360 seconds = 6:00 per km.
For a cross-unit example, an 8:00-per-mile pace is 480 seconds per mile. Dividing by 1.609344 gives about 298.26 seconds per kilometre. At that pace, 5 km takes approximately 1,491 seconds, or 24 minutes 51 seconds after rounding.
How to use each mode
To calculate pace, enter a distance and elapsed time, choose the distance and pace units, then select the pace action. To calculate time, enter distance and pace. To calculate distance, enter time and pace.
All required values must be greater than zero. Hours may be zero when minutes or seconds make the total duration positive. Likewise, pace minutes may be zero when pace seconds are positive. Blank and non-positive combinations return an input warning instead of a fabricated zero result.
Race-distance presets only fill the distance field. They do not recommend a target pace or predict performance.
What the result means
The output is an arithmetic average over the entered distance and duration. A 6:00/km result means the total time divided by the total distance equals six minutes per kilometre; it does not mean every kilometre was run in exactly six minutes.
Use the result to reconcile a measured distance and duration, prepare neutral split calculations, or compare records that use different distance units. Keep the same definition of elapsed time when comparing sessions—for example, decide whether pauses are included.
Accuracy and limitations
- The calculation is only as accurate as the distance and time inputs. GPS drift, course measurement, manual timing, pauses, and rounding can affect the result.
- Hills, wind, surface, temperature, turns, crowding, fatigue, and hydration can make an average pace unsuitable as a prediction for another route or day.
- This calculator does not estimate fitness, prescribe training intensity, assess injury risk, or determine whether a pace is medically appropriate.
- Short distances amplify timing and GPS errors. Reported precision should not exceed the precision of the measurement.
- The calculator uses the exact international-mile relationship, but its screen output is rounded for readability.
If exercise causes chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, or another concerning symptom, stop and seek appropriate medical help rather than relying on a pace value.
