MCHC Calculator
Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) describes the average concentration of hemoglobin within the packed red-cell volume. Laboratories normally report it as part of a complete blood count (CBC). This page only reproduces the arithmetic from hemoglobin and hematocrit values already measured by a laboratory.
Enter hemoglobin in grams per decilitre (g/dL) and hematocrit as a percentage. Both must be positive, and hematocrit cannot exceed 100%. Do not enter hematocrit as a decimal fraction: enter 42 for 42%, not 0.42.
Formula
The calculation is:
MCHC = hemoglobin ÷ hematocrit × 100
Because hematocrit is entered as a percent, multiplying by 100 returns the result in g/dL. The calculator does not derive hemoglobin or hematocrit from other CBC indices.
Worked example
For hemoglobin of 14 g/dL and hematocrit of 42%:
14 g/dL ÷ 42% × 100 = 33.33 g/dL
This arithmetic result should be compared with the reference interval printed on the same laboratory report and interpreted with the other CBC measurements.
How to interpret the result
MedlinePlus gives a typical MCHC interval of 32 to 36 g/dL, while explicitly noting that normal ranges can vary slightly between laboratories. Age, clinical context, measurement method, specimen quality, and the reporting laboratory all matter.
An MCHC value alone does not diagnose iron deficiency, anemia, hereditary spherocytosis, dehydration, or another condition. Clinicians interpret hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, red-cell count, distribution width, symptoms, history, and sometimes additional tests together.
Limits and clinical safety
This calculator is not a blood test and cannot verify that the entered results or units are correct. Pre-analytical and analytical problems—including hemolysis, lipemia, cold agglutinins, sample handling, or transcription error—may produce implausible combinations. A calculated value that conflicts with the laboratory report should prompt a unit and specimen check, not self-treatment.
