Cycling to Running Calculator
This calculator converts a cycling session into the running session that burns roughly the same energy, using standard MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) intensity values for cycling and the widely used energy cost of running. Enter your average cycling speed, ride duration, and body weight, plus the running pace you want to train at, and the tool returns the equivalent running distance and how long that run would take at your pace. Triathletes, commuters who mix sports, and anyone balancing cardio minutes across two sports can use it to compare sessions. This page does not read ride data files, does not estimate cycling power, and cannot predict your running performance.
Method and formula
Cycling intensity is taken from the Compendium of Physical Activities speed bands, expressed as MET values:

Energy expenditure uses the standard MET calorie equation:
calories = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes
Running energy cost is taken as about 1.036 kcal per kilometre per kilogram of body weight, so the equivalent running distance is:
running distance = calories ÷ (1.036 × weight (kg))
running time = running distance × pace (min/km)
Because both the cycling and running calorie estimates scale with body weight, weight cancels out of the distance estimate — the same ride maps to the same run distance for riders of any weight. Weight still matters for the calorie number itself.
Worked example
For a 60-minute ride at 25 km/h by a 70 kg rider, converting to a 5.5 min/km run:
- Cycling intensity: 25 km/h falls in the 22.5–25.6 band → 10.0 MET
- Calories: 10.0 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 × 60 = 735 kcal
- Running distance: 735 ÷ (1.036 × 70) ≈ 10.14 km
- Running time: 10.14 × 5.5 ≈ 56 minutes
As a second example, a 30-minute commute at 18 km/h (6.8 MET) for the same rider burns about 214 kcal, equivalent to roughly 2.95 km of running — about 16 minutes at the same pace.
What the result means
The equivalent running session is an energy match, not a fitness match. Cycling is non-impact and uses different muscles, so two sessions burning the same energy train the body differently; the run will feel harder on your legs and joints than the ride did. The result is best used for balancing weekly energy volume across sports or approximating how a cross-training day fits a running plan.
The pace input converts distance into time so you can schedule the session. Enter a recent, honest running pace — using a race pace you cannot currently sustain will underestimate the time commitment.
Accuracy and limitations
- MET speed bands are population averages for level-road cycling. Headwinds, hills, stop-and-go traffic, body position, and bike type (road, mountain, e-bike) change real intensity, sometimes by a wide margin.
- The calorie equation is the standard gross-energy form and includes resting metabolism; it is an estimate, not a measurement. Personal meters, if you have them, are more accurate.
- The running cost constant 1.036 kcal/kg/km is an average for steady running on level ground; very slow jogging, very fast running, and steep terrain deviate from it.
- The tool is not a training prescription. Pain, injury risk, and cardiovascular load do not transfer one-to-one between sports; build running volume gradually if you are new to running.
